Coyotes have made their way into cities and neighborhoods around America and coastal Central Florida is no exception.

“Coyotes in Florida: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly” will be the topic of the Marine Discovery Center’s August online lecture, presented by Lauren Barth of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The online presentation is set for Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Barth’s coyote presentation will focus on helping Floridians understand and live with this mid-sized member of the canine family. She will discuss why coyotes are now present in the state and their biology and role in the environment.

She also will provide updates on recent research and address potential problems with coyotes, including livestock and pet loss. The online session will help participants learn about applicable regulations and why eradication is not achievable for this species. Barth will also provide details on how to be safe around coyotes and how to coexist with this new predator on Florida’s landscape.

Barth is the wildlife assistance biologist of the Northeast Region for FWC. She provides education, outreach and technical assistance to citizens to help reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Barth earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in environmental studies from Florida International University. She has taught university classes on environmental science and Florida ecology, and has participated in research of small mammals and birds in Florida, Texas, Nevada and Utah.
