UCC makes oyster matsMar 10th, 2014 | Category: Blogs, MDC News, Oyster Restoration News, Shoreline Restoration News
On Saturday, March 8th, ten volunteers from the United Church of Christ in New Smyrna Beach came together to make oyster mats for the Shuck and Share project. Church members of all ages spent the morning learning about shoreline restoration, then assembled oyster mats as part of the project. In just a short time, the church members created 22 new oyster mats!
These mats will help rebuild oyster communities in local waters, providing food and habitat for many different organisms in the Indian River Lagoon. The mats also help stabilize the shoreline, preventing erosion and reducing the impact of boat wake. A big ‘thank you’ to this caring, enthusiastic group of citizens who are truly making a difference in the community!
