A hearty group of 13 volunteers showed up at the Marine Discovery Center on November 1 to make oyster mats in spite of howling winds and dipping temperatures in Central Florida. The group started the morning under the pavilion behind MDC, but winds from the north proved too blustery, so the group moved to the sunny south side of the MDC building to construct oyster mats. By early afternoon, the volunteers had produced 31 oyster mats, which will be used in future deployments in the Indian River Lagoon for shoreline restoration projects. And, by the end of the Saturday mat-making session, the dedicated volunteers all respectively headed off for well-deserved soup and hot chocolate.
