Locals and Visitors Help the Lagoon

You, too, can help make our Indian River Lagoon a healthier and more productive ecosystem! Come participate in our open oyster mat days at the Marine Discovery Center. Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, we’ll be out in the back oyster lot from 9am – 1pm making mats and bags from recycled oyster shells. These mats and bags will serve as the foundation for new oyster beds in the area.

Last weekend, over a dozen people spent part of their morning building oyster mats at MDC. Together, they created 30 new mats for lagoon restoration! Some brought their neighbors, while others brought their families, but all of them enjoyed the beautiful weather and went home knowing they had made a difference in their community.

We always love meeting new volunteers and seeing familiar faces return to these events. So come join us on April 5th for our next mat-making session. Drop by any time between 9 and 1 and we’ll show you how to assemble an oyster mat or oyster bag. Hope to see you soon – the Indian River Lagoon needs all the help it can get!
