MDC December  Free Lecture Will Focus On Florida Manatees

Dr. Katie Tripp of Florida’s Save the Manatee Club will be the guest speaker for the December lecture at the Marine Discovery Center.

The lecture, “Manatee Conservation in Florida & Beyond,” will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, starting at 6 p.m., and will be hosted by the Marine Discovery Center, located at 520 Barracuda Boulevard in New Smyrna Beach. (Free to public, no reservations required)

Tripp will discuss manatee migration during the winter months, manatee population and mortality in Florida, and a variety of significant manatee facts. In addition, she will discuss manatee advocacy and policy making, as well as the importance of protecting coastal lands and waters for the species’ survival.

At the conclusion of her presentation, Tripp will entertain questions by citizens about manatees.

Tripp is the Save the Manatee Club’s Director of Science and Conservation. She holds a Ph.D. in veterinary medical sciences from the University of Florida and has authored and co-authored numerous papers regarding the conservation of manatees and their habitat.

In addition, Tripp is a supervisor with the Volusia County Soil and Water Conservation District. She has served as Chair of the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership and presently serves on the Executive Committee of the Florida Springs Council, as well as the Steering Committees of the Blue Spring Alliance and Floridians’ Clean Water Declaration.
