Sandi Sturge, the center’s retail buyer, recently restocked the shop’s shelves with a variety of new toys, books, puzzles, jewelry, wall hangings, soaps and gifts for children and adults.

“We have a great range of books for all ages — from the youngest reader who wants to learn about pelicans, sharks and dolphins, to beautiful coffee table books and even a Smithsonian birdcall book that features the actual bird songs,” said Sturge.

MDC’s book selection is renown even among adult Florida Coastal Naturalists. The top-selling “Living Beaches” continues to be the must-have book for beach lovers, while touring guides for Florida kayak and canoe trails are also popular items. A variety of field guides and I.D. charts are available on Florida birds, snakes, turtles and weather systems.

Other educational marine life books available at MDC’s gift shop focus on sea horses, shells, birds, sea glass, sea beans, manatees, sea turtles and on the Indian River Lagoon. Kids will love puzzles of beach glass, Florida rocks and “Turtle Treasures,” as well as bingo games on nature, the ocean and weather.

New to the gift shop are sea life animal cookies, hand-held puzzles, birdcall whistles and bird feeders, and decks of cards featuring trees, birds, butterflies, fish and dolphins. Glass and crystal figurines of marine animals also will make thoughtful gifts.

Sea life drawings by North Carolina artist Vicky Lowe are available in the gift shop and are perfect for framing. Other home décor items at the center include large glass dishes that may be used as wall hangings or even as birdbaths. A popular new addition for hot tea drinkers is a manatee-shaped tea diffuser, although supplies are limited for this new product.

A new shipment of mermaid jewelry, toys and books are now offered. Kids will also love the variety of puppets that include turtles, stingrays, whales, sharks and dolphins.

In addition, MDC’s gift shop offers several different models of wood-encased Galileo thermometers. Wind chimes and handmade journals are also quality gift ideas.

Of course, hats and visors with the MDC logo are available in the shop. Beach-goers may prefer a floppy hat that comes with a handy storage bag.

Current MDC members may take advantage of their 10 percent discount for all items purchased in the gift shop.

All items purchased in the MDC gift shop benefit the non-profit center’s educational programs throughout the year.
